On-Site Surveys and Inspections for Asbestos and Mold

Our services include comprehensive on-site inspections for asbestos and mold. During our visit we take tape-lift, bulk, and/or swab samples of suspicious materials. We also gather air-cassette samples to determine if contamination is airborne. Emphasis is placed on the protection of building occupants, secure containment of any hazardous materials, and traceable handling of specimens through chain-of-custody documentation.

On-Site Assessments for Lead

Although lead-containing paint was banned in the US in 1978, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates that millions of homes in the U.S. still contain lead. Addressing these hazards is critical to ensuring children have healthy and productive lives. We perform XRF analysis on-site to quickly and accurately measure lead concentrations in painted surfaces without damaging the painted surface. We can also test ceramic tubs, shower surrounds, flooring and counter tile for lead since older porcelain and enamel coatings can have extremely high levels of lead. Our certified inspectors can provide an immediate lead risk assessments during an on-site inspection.

On-Site Demolition Surveys

A full site investigation is required when a building or part of a building is due to be demolished. Before any work begins, all areas of the project must be thoroughly inspected for potential hazards including asbestos, mold, lead, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) from air-conditioning systems, mercury (still found in some UV light bulbs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) an industrial chemical used in the manufacturing of transformers and hydraulic systems before being banned in the US in the late 1970s. This risk assessment information is used to protect the demolition team and members of the community who may pass close by the demolition site.

Laboratory Analysis for Asbestos

Our AIHA and NVLAP accredited laboratory uses state-of-the-art equipment and procedures to deliver fast and accurate test results. Our lab analyzes bulk asbestos samples by stereo microscopy using phase contrast Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM). Various techniques including dispersion staining and gravimetric reduction are used in accordance with EPA and OSHA point count methods. Floor tile analysis by point count is rejected by our laboratory. Our lab uses tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvent to dissolve the plastic matrix and extract fibers from floor tile. Phase contrast microscopy is then used to image fibers as small as 0.2 micron.

Laboratory Analysis for Mold

Our AIHA and NVLAP accredited laboratory uses phase contrast Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) to identify and quantify mold spores. Whether the sample was collected by air-cassette filtering, tape-lift or as a bulk specimen, our lab personnel can identify most species of molds associated with water-damage with high levels of accuracy. The skills and experience of the microscopist are critical since analysis must consider spore size, shape, texture, septation, attachment scars and color.
